〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Loki
CHARACTER AGE: 1,052; looks like he’s in his mid-thirties.
SERIES: Marvel Cinematic Universe
CHRONOLOGY: End of Thor: Ragnarok
CLASS: Hero (in his own mind); rage-quit villain. Often refers to himself as a monster.
HOUSING: Anywhere but Heropa.

BACKGROUND: Loki at the MCU Wikia.

The world of Marvel is a complicated mess of super humans, magic, and aliens. For the most part, it takes place in a modern Earth setting, though Loki is from another planet entirely. He calls Asgard home, a world that’s a mix of advanced alien technology and old Norse legend. He largely plays the role of the villain in this world, flitting from one allegiance to another as he sees fit in order to obtain vengeance on Odin for lying to him his whole life and fulfill whatever other ambitions he may have at the moment.

PERSONALITY: Bruce Banner once described Loki's mind as being like a bag of cats, and that is probably the most accurate description for him in the entire series. In his usual state, he's a hissing, writhing mass of rage and spite, but let the cat out of the bag, and all he demands in your attention and your adoration -- or else.

Loki, in general, is a complicated person, with layers upon layers of scheming hiding anything he may really be feeling. At any given time, there is usually some kind of plot churning in his head, some way to cause mischief, though it is next to impossible to tell what he's really thinking at any given time. Even before he established himself as Thor's main nemesis, he had a habit of making his brother's life miserable, going so far as to enlist the Jotuns -- creatures he grew up believing to be monsters -- to ruin Thor's ascension to the throne of Asgard. He is exceedingly charming and charismatic, known among all Asgardians to have a way of twisting just about anyone with his lies. There are very few people who fail to be taken in by his charms, to the point where when Heimdall called him out on his attempt to lie to him, he was teased for his silver tongue turning to lead. He is also highly intelligent and a master strategist, able to see through an enemy attack in the middle of battle and either counter it, or manipulate it to his advantage. That doesn't mean he's a slouch when it comes to his physical prowess, however; Loki is very much a skilled and fierce warrior in his own right, and when there are no plots and schemes left, he is out on the battlefield with his daggers and magic at the ready.

Despite his cunning and seeming invincibility, Loki has a huge weakness in the form of the massive chip on his shoulder regarding his family. He was born a Frost Giant and discarded at birth by his father, the Jotun King Laufey, for being too small and weak for their kind. He was found by Odin, and raised side by side with Thor as brothers, though he always felt locked in his brother's shadow growing up. Even though Odin kept insisting that they were both meant to be kings, it was very clear to him that their father always favored Thor. It lead to Loki fostering an intense jealousy for his brother, to the point where he made attempts on his life as early as eight years old. When Loki found out the truth of his existence, it was an intensely painful betrayal for him, and he resented both his fathers, Laufey for abandoning him and Odin for lying to him for his entire life. He immediately hatching a plot that ideally would have led to him killing both men if Thor hadn't stopped him, cementing his place as a betrayer to the House of Odin. Despite all his misdeeds, Thor still insists on the good in Loki for a very long time, finally giving up after he sees that no matter what happens, Loki will always remain the same. Only their mother, Frigga, whom Loki was close to all his life, continued to believe in him and love him as if he were her own son. Her death tore him apart, especially because he knew he was responsible for it, and he was more than willing to cooperate with his brother to get revenge on her murderer.

Loki has a deep seated hatred for his Jotun heritage. He grew up with the Asgardian tales of how Frost Giants were horrible monsters that lived savagely and would kidnap young children to consume. To learn he was one, that he wasn't even good enough to be one, had him falling into such a rage that he willingly went so far as to try to destroy Jotunheim. This hatred has been turned against him time and time again, with Odin going so far as to call him Laufeyson, something that clearly made him even more angry at the Allfather than he already was. He would never and will never acknowledge himself as a child of Jotunheim, nor would he use the name "Laufeyson" outside of any ruses he may use to get close to his enemies.

Despite this hatred for his origns, Loki also possesses an intense sense of pride, in both himself and his skills. He believes himself more powerful, more intelligent than just about anyone his comes across, and it shows in his posturing and other the top theatrics, going so far as to shout, "Your savior has arrived!" when descending upon Hela's undead army to defend the people of Asgard. No one can be as smart as him, as talented in magic in him, as clever and as witty as he is, and he would never admit to any incidents where he wasn't in his right mind -- it just didn't happen as far as he was concerned! This way of thinking ultimately leads to his downfall more often than not, as he ends up severely underestimating people like Thor and the Avengers in general. He often looks down on his brother for his preference of hitting a thing as hard as possible and hope it sticks, and does not seem to be able to grasp the fact that humans, weak as they are in comparison to him, can be better than him in any way. Ultimately when things don't go his way, he ends up lashing out even harder, his actions making him look like a spiteful, spoiled child that isn't getting his way. The problem is, he can't even see these flaws in himself, and he didn't even think there was anything wrong with him until not only Frigga called him out on his behavior, but also Thor. This is especially obvious when he finally gains power, when he finally proves that he really is as crafty and talented as he claims he is and takes the throne of Asgard after banishing Odin to Earth, he wastes his time by building monuments to his greatness and lounging around, not actually being responsible with the power of a king.

While all of this still applies to his current point in canon, Loki is much more subdued compared to when he first appeared. It's very clear he still blames himself for his mother's death, even years later, and the fact that Odin only sent a lackey to inform him left a wound behind more painful than anything inflicted with a physical blade. More than that, though, is he is also scared for numerous reasons; Thanos is still out there, no doubt wanting his head for his inability to lead his armies in conquering Earth. There's no where in the nine realms where he can feel safe anymore now that Asgard is destroyed. To top it all off, he's essentially just had to sit back and watch as Thor suffered through a similar betrayal as he did at Odin's lies, only instead of becoming bitter and spiteful as he did, Thor only grew more powerful, both in his abilities and as a person. Perhaps, even, a small part of him acknowledges the fact that his brother may well have surpassed him, and that was why he willingly stayed to watch his brother be crowned king of the people of Asgard.

Ultimately, Loki is an intensely complicated character, always scheming, always coming up with new ways to spread lies and cause mischief. However, his mother's death, seeing the home he grew up in destroyed, and taking in his brother's words about how he's always stayed the same has mellowed him out for the time being. He may continue to spread his devious ways in the future, but for now, he's behaving himself.

POWER:
Bullshit Sorcery
Unlike his brother, Loki had very little interest in training in direct combat growing up. While he is rather skilled with his knives, he prefers to fight with the magic he learned from his mother, Frigga. Word of God says he can go toe to toe easily with Dr. Strange in terms of ability, though the exact limits of Loki’s power have not been addressed, and each movie he appears in seems to pull out something new out of no where. Therefore, I’m settling with the following three sub skills:
  • Illusions/shapeshifting - Probably Loki’s most used ability and what he’s most known for. Loki is able to cast powerful illusions on both himself and others, so far as to shift their forms entirely. In the movies, Loki constantly does this to change what he’s wearing, but has also changed himself to look and sound like Steve Rogers, and Thor to look like Siv. While people seem to be his preference, animals are not beyond his ability, as in Ragnarok, Thor recounts a time when Loki caught him by surprise by disguising himself as a snake, only to transform back when Thor picked him up before stabbing him. This isn’t just limited to people, either; he can change the form of non-living items as well, and has even manipulated an entire room to look different from what it really was. He also can leave behind clones of himself to distract his enemies; they look, sound, and move like the real thing, but try to touch them and your hand will pass right through. These clones can also pass through walls, and Loki has used them to get to places he cannot physically reach, as shown in both the first Thor movie and Ragnarok, where he used this illusion to communicate with his brother while he was imprisoned.
  • Presence Concealment - Loki has the ability to hide his presence as well as the presence of people he’s touching from sight. Rather than manipulating lightwaves around himself, however, this concealment works as a kind of hypnosis; his power essentially tells the mind of those affected that he simply isn’t there. As such, it’s very possible for this ability to fail should the one being forced under this power be immune to hypnotic suggestions.
  • Conjuring - Loki has the ability to summon objects to his hands from a known location and (presumably) return them to that location at his whim. This is supposedly how he always has his knives at his disposal, and how he summons the Casket of Ancient Winters to him when he freezes Heimdall in place during the climax of the first movie. This does have it’s limits; he needs to at least have an idea of where the object is and what it looks like in order to call it to him, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to do so. In the movies, this ability seems to have a ridiculous amount of range, though in game I will limit it to the city Loki is currently in.

Jotun Physiology
Loki is not Asgardian; he is actually a small Frost Giant, or Jotun. Therefore, while he has superhuman ability akin to Asgardians in terms of strength, speed, and durability, he is also completely immune to cold temperatures, and can dwell in below zero climates without the need for protective gear.

As far as his appearance, the wikia states that Odin enchanted him to appear Asgardian, an enchantment so strong that it could only be temporarily disabled by Jotun ice magic. Loki himself seems to contradict this, however, as on the rare occasion he is in his Frost Giant form, he still has hair, something none of the other Frost Giants seem to have, at least not in the same way as Loki is shown. I personally believe that Odin’s touch when he was a baby possibly accidentally altered his Jotun magic, triggering an unconscious, chameleon-like effect that Loki himself maintains out of pure spite and hatred for what he is. Thor Dark World seems to support this theory, as when Loki faked his death, his appearance seemed to start to slip back toward his true form (though this could also have been for dramatic effect on his part, and Thor fell for another one of his illusions).

The Tesseract/Space Stone
Also known as the Cube, the Tesseract is a containment chamber for the Space Stone, one of the Infinity Stones that Thanos is hunting for. On its own, the Tesseract can’t do much of anything outside of burning people’s hands, as it is a limitless source of energy due to the Stone within. However, when combined with the right technology, it can do just about anything requiring energy, from creating super powered weapons to opening gateways through space, as was its original purpose. Loki grabbed it from Odin’s vault when he triggered Ragnarok, and it’s possible that was why he was able to rejoin Thor and the others in escaping from Asgard as it was destroyed.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[ Loki is all smiles as he appears on the communicators today, though there is a gleam of mischief in his eyes. Whatever comes next can't be good, right? ]

Greetings, people of Midgard. I am Loki, of the people of Asgard. I have been through many battles in my long life so far, and I have seen many things that mere mortals could not begin to grasp.

However, as loath as I am to admit, there are still some creations, some mythical contraptions that are beyond even my vast knowledge. And that, my friends, is why I appear before you on your 'network' today; with one, very simple question.

[ He pauses here, fingers pressed to his lips for dramatic effect, and... ]

What... precisely, is a taco?

[ ...or maybe there's nothing bad going on at all. ]

FINAL NOTES:
Addressing the can of worms that is The Avengers and how grossly out of character Loki is compared to the rest of his appearances: the fan wikia says that Loki was also under the influence of the Mind Stone, the Infinity Stone in his staff that he was using. Though they site the movie as the source of this information, and the movie doesn’t really make it too obvious, I’m sticking with this theory, as it’s the only plausible explanation in universe for his behavior. He didn’t bother to defend himself afterward because he didn’t see the point: he was still mad at his family for lying to him, his pride wouldn’t let him admit he wasn’t in his right mind, and he didn’t feel his reputation as a liar and a trickster helped his case. Plus, he had just failed THANOS; hiding away in an Asgardian prison was better than the alternative.

A more minor note, but because Loki’s shapeshifting ability allows him to appear as either gender, I’ll be using “he” when he’s male in appearance and “she” when female. Others are free to refer to him however they wish OOCly. ICly, he wouldn’t give a damn; he’s better than all of you tiny Midgardians anyway.
